About Music Together

Music Together® recognizes that young children learn best from the powerful role models of parents/caregivers who are actively making music. The program brings families together by providing a rich musical environment in the classroom studio each week and then facilitating family participation in spontaneous musical activity at home in daily life—which is so important to music development and early childhood learning. It's based on the recognition that, in a supportive environment, children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and confidently participate in the music of their culture. Music Together creates that environment! Through actual music-making experiences, we introduce children to the pleasures of producing music from their very own hands, hearts and voices!

Music is a universal language that transcends boundaries and reaches beyond culture. It touches the depths of our souls, expresses our common emotions, and inspires us all. Music Together actively serves over 2,500 communities in over 40 countries around the world. The program seeks to connect families and communities across the globe as they express and explore our basic human instinct for making music -- together.

The Music Together approach provides an exciting and vibrant musical environment for children to learn through imitation and play, through being immersed in music and musical play, and through every interaction with adults and other children both older and younger. The family-like setting of Music Together's mixed-age classes enables siblings to attend together, creating an ideal learning environment where infants, toddlers, and preschoolers can freely participate at their own levels.

The Music Together program was created in 1987 and introduced to the public at the Center for Music and Young Children in Princeton, NJ. Music Together's early childhood music education program recognizes that:

I. All children are musical.

II. All children can achieve basic music competence (defined as the ability to sing in tune with accurate rhythm).

III. The participation and modeling of parents and other primary caregivers, regardless of their musical ability, is essential to a child's musical growth.

IV. Young children’s musical growth occurs best in a playful, musically rich, and developmentally appropriate setting, free of direct instruction and performance pressure, where learning activities are accessible, interesting, and fun for both children and adults.

 

What are Music Together classes like?

  • Fully trained, registered Music Together teachers lead groups of six to twelve children and their parents or caregivers (nannies, babysitters, grandparents, or relatives) in forty-five minutes of music and movement experiences.

  • Each weekly class offers a dozen songs and rhythmic rhymes, including fingerplays, small- and large-movement activities, and instrument play.

  • Children and their adults have opportunities to create and improvise making up new words to songs, offering movement ideas, making silly sounds, and sharing musical ideas.

  • The relaxed, playful, non-performance-oriented classroom setting respects and supports the unique learning styles, developmental levels, and temperaments of all participants.

  • Each semester features a new song collection, and families receive CDs, an illustrated songbook with music-making ideas for spontaneous music play outside of class and access to the Family Music Zone online as well as the new iPhone app - "Hello Everybody".

  • Music Together classes foster a strong sense of community, not just between parents and children, but among all the families in the group.

How Does Music Learning Support All Learning?

Wiggling, singing, and laughing with your child is so much fun, it's easy to forget how much learning is taking place! This research-based curriculum not only develops music skills such as singing in tune and moving with accurate rhythm -- it nurtures creativity, self-expression, and confidence while also supporting social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. Because these benefits build over time, children enjoy the fullest growth in each of these areas when they participate as consistently as possible up through kindergarten.

Why Is Your Role Essential?

Young children learn through play and experimentation and by watching and listening to the grownups they love. Setting an example as an enthusiastic participator in music activities is the best thing any parent or caregiver can do to help set a child on the road to a lifelong love of music. Parents don't need to have music skills—they just need a desire to play and have fun with their children! Our teachers are specially trained to create a safe atmosphere so you can happily join in, experiment, or even get silly—and feel closer to your child while doing so.

 

Is Music Together a research based program?

Music Together, created by Kenneth K. Guilmartin and co-authored by Dr. Lili M. Levinowitz was created based on how the brain processes and organizes musical material, how children learn, and how the surrounding environment can support this learning.
